When Suyin Lim is offered the opportunity to travel from her hometown Penang, to join her older sister as a trainee nurse in London, Suyin jumps at the chance. But the plans to unite with her sister are altered when Suyin’s sister returns to Penang different. Although concerned, Suyin’s father still encourages her to follow her dreams of a life in London. Without the guidance of her sister, Suyin is swept up in the city life, one with such vibrance and a whole different culture to the one she grew up in. It’s a vibrant new adventure with many new hurdles.

As Suyin acclimatises to her new surroundings, she finds herself thinking about the events that caused her sister to return home, between immersing herself in the life and care of her parents, Suyin finds herself walking in the footsteps of her sister to uncover the truth to the mystery. Bethnal Green is a gorgeously written novel about identity, sisterhood, loss, hope and the wonderful work that the NHS does. The writing is impeccable, the place of time is perfect and I loved every single page! An absolute must-read debut!
