Have I found my new favourite series? YES!
If you’re dying for a book (with a series on the way) that carries the essence of your favourite fantasy novels - i.e. Throne of Glass meets Daenerys Targaryen, then Fear the Flames is the book for you!
Fear the Flames had me in a chokehold from the prologue, where we encounter a seer who tells the royal parents of Princess Elowen that their daughter’s soul connection to five dragons will either drive Imirath to greatness, or will be their destruction. As her father’s fear of the latter grows, he cruelly separates Elowen from her dragons, imprisoning her for years until finally, she is rescued - but her dragons are not.
Years later, Elowen finds herself faced with an offer that she can’t refuse - one that will end with her saving her dragons and seeking the revenge that has simmered away within her for all the years they have been apart. By her side is the Commander of Vareveth, Cayden Veles, the most feared and dangerous man in all the kingdoms of Ravaryn and her father's sworn enemy - my romantasy loving friends, you ALL need this this book. Father’s enemy = allies to lovers, I am SOLD. Let me warn you, you are going to eat Fear the Flames up!
The writing, atmosphere, and sizzling chemistry between our main characters is absolutely delicious and Olivia really built the world perfectly, setting things up seamlessly for the second book in the series, which I’m sorry to say I NEED IMMEDIATELY!
I’ve compared Fear the Flames to Throne of Glass meets Daenerys Targaryen, not only due to the tropes, dragons and feel of the book, but because of the strong female characters who are a) the complete equal or above to their male counterparts and b) respected and appreciated, as they should be, for more than their physical appearances. The respect that not only Elowen has for others, but the respect others have for her is utterly dreamy, and I’m so here for it!
