Spanning seven decades, Homeseeking is perfect for fans of epic literary fiction. From 1940s Shanghai, through Hong Kong, Taiwan, and America all the way up to the contemporary, we chronicle Chinese history alongside a cinematic love story that defines the times. Haiwen and Suchi begin as childhood friends that blossom into teenage sweethearts but fate intervenes when Haiwen joins the army in place of his brother, saving him from the draft. But all is not lost when they meet again by chance sixty years later... Karissa Chen has made a mighty debut with this novel on soulmates and the power of a love that spans time and space during communism, Chinese civil war, Japanese occupation and migration.
This novel left me deeply moved and taught me a lot about the Chinese diaspora. It is long and character-driven which made for really immersive reading and I can’t praise it highly enough. It’s become a Debut Digest cliche but I couldn’t believe this was the first novel by Karissa Chen and I’m already eager for more. I can see this making huge waves in the literary world.
