Zen Cho is a fantasy writer who is making her debut in the romance genre this summer. We follow Renee who lives in London, is estranged from her family in Singapore, and is attempting to build a successful business empire. One day her father calls telling her she’s in the running to inherit the family company and at the same time, she bumps into her teenage love, Yap Ket Siong. He broke her heart when they were seventeen, but can things be different a second time around? As Renee and Ket Siong spend time together, we find out the threads which connect their lives run deeper then they could have imagined. This book is a fun and easy summer read, however I will admit that I’m not entirely convinced by Zen’s execution of this genre. There is a great art to writing in a conversational, informal manner whilst executing a well structured story. Often conversations and characters were introduced with little preparation, leaving me confused. I also felt the plot and characters needed more depth to help me connect and I found the ending lacked resolution. Elements like exciting locations, outfits and dinners were exciting and well described and I think the overall idea has merit, the story just felt like it needed more depth and structure in order to be effective.
