Review of The Phoenix Keeper by S. A. Maclean

This gorgeous, cosy, magical romantasy debut can stay in my heart for however long it likes. I fell straight in love with The Phoenix Keeper, S. A. Maclean’s writing enveloped me immediately within Aila’s world and the magical creatures she cares for and utterly adores. The Phoenix Keeper tells the tale of Aila, whose childhood dream was to help conserve the phoenix’s, firebirds who are quickly becoming extinct due to being poached and sold. Aila’s passion for animals captured my attention, but so did her loneliness. When phoenix heists begin to occur Aila wants to help, but she also knows how lonely her own phoenix has become, without a mate for years. Our shy protagonist decides enough is enough and puts her neck on the line, with success. What transpires is not only a development in their world-renowned zoo’s phoenix breeding program, but also of Aila’s people skills and confidence - yes, I cheered many times! The hopes of her phoenix’s loneliness ending are echoed in Aila’s character when she agrees to help to make her dreams happen (and with a sprinkling of romance, we are hooked - the phoenixes aren’t the only thing setting off sparks!)

S.A. Maclean has created a whole magical world with captivating characters that will genuinely whisk the reader away to a place that they never knew they needed until they visited. I am so excited for S.A Maclean’s next book, and for the promising writing career ahead of her! WOW!
